Home Generators – Choosing The Right System by Paul Wright
No one likes to deal with power outages; besides being frustrating, they can also be quite dangerous. For that reason, home generators have become increasingly popular, especially in areas where seasonal storms regularly cause power outages. There are lots of different options for home generators, and the one you choose will depend on how much you want to spend, how much electricity you want to be able to use, and other factors.
One option is to purchase a portable generator that has to be manually started and stopped. They run on either gas or diesel fuel and must be run outside where there is plenty of ventilation due to the high levels of carbon monoxide that they put out. These home generators come in lots of different sizes. For example, you can pick up a small, 4,000 watt gas generator for around $350 online or in local hardware stores. But, in order to produce electricity for an extended period of time, you will need to refill its tank several times. For that reason, portable generators are not a good option if you want a long term backup plan.
Permanently installed standby generators are more expensive than portable models, but they offer several notable advantages. They are installed outside the home and connected directly to a natural gas or liquid propane line. The generator is connected to the home’s electrical system through an automatic transfer switch that turns on the generator as soon as power to the house is lost. Most models take 10 to 30 seconds to transfer power after the electricity goes out. Though these types of generators cost $2,000 and up, they are a much more permanent and long term solution.
Home generators can help keep your home and your family safe during power outages. Depending on your needs and budget, you may opt for a permanent or portable solution.
